Omaha Native Designs New Lost Rail Golf Club

OMAHA (March 10, 2022) –Omaha native Scott Hoffman joined the NebGolf Podcast to talk about his design of the new Lost Rail Golf Club, opening this year near Gretna.

Hoffman was an accomplished junior golfer out of Omaha Westside High School. He won the 1987 Nebraska Junior Amateur at Beatrice Country Club, and went on to play golf at the University of Nebraska and Creighton University.

The journey to becoming a golf course architect started in church around the age of 10 for Hoffman. He would pass the time by drawing golf holes in the church bulletin. That eventually became more than a pastime, as he went to work for Bill Kubly and Landscapes Unlimited after graduating from Creighton.

After learning the business of building golf courses for five years, Hoffman went on to work for the acclaimed golf course architect Tom Fazio. He worked on some major projects under Fazio, including Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club in Idaho, currently the No. 31 course in the U.S., according to Golf Digest.

Hoffman has been heavily involved in several other high-profile projects, including Scottsdale National Golf Club and the Dunes Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

It was a back-and-forth with his cousin, Dirk Chatelain of the Omaha World-Herald, though that sparked his latest project. The cousins started playing around with contour maps in Douglas and Sarpy Counties, and everything escalated when they found a property near Gretna in 2019. Pretty soon, they were working with Kubly and Landscapes Unlimited to purchase the land and start building a new private club with Hoffman's design.

Lost Rail Golf Club is nearly complete, and will open later this year. It features an 18-hole golf course, as well as a six-hole short course. The club is all about golf, no tennis courts or pool. Hoffman said the course sits on three distinctive land forms and the variety of the topography and holes will create a memorable experience.
