Fremont Stage Set for 49th Nebraska Women's Amateur
Championship Begins Monday at Fremont Golf Club
OMAHA (July 28, 2023) – The stage is set at Fremont Golf Club for the 49th Nebraska Women’s Amateur Championship next week, July 31-August 2, and a talented field is ready for the trophy chase.
It is the second time hosting for the club which previously hosted in 1990, when Omaha's Susan Marchese won her sixth of a record 11 titles.
The championship begins Monday with the first round for the 46 players in the Championship Division. The field includes just one past champion, Danica Badura of Aurora, but some others who have hoisted a NebGolf trophy.
Two-time champion Danica Badura of Aurora headlines the field, and is looking to become just the fifth player to win at least three titles. She won the 2020 and 2021 titles, before finishing ninth last year in her attempt at the three-peat. Badura, the former University of South Dakota player, is transferring to Lipscomb University in the fall.
Badura is paired with 2020 Nebraska Women's Match Play Champion Katie Ruge in the first round. Ruge will be looking for her second NebGolf title, and would join an accomplished list of players who have won both women's majors. They will tee off at 9 a.m. on Monday with Omaha Maverick golfer Nicole Hansen.
Omaha's Julia Karmazin is also searching for her second title after taking home this year's Nebraska Girls Amateur title at Lochland Country Club in Hastings. She's paired with two-time Nebraska Girls Match Play champion Lauren Thiele, who could become the third Thiele sister to become a Nebraska Women's Amateur champ. She'd also add a second trophy for the family this summer, after her sister Lindsey won the Nebraska Women's Match Play in June. Karmazin and Thiele are paired with Husker golfer Brooke Bream, of Phoenix, Arizona, and will start play at 9:10 a.m.
Another player to watch is UNK golfer Allison Comer, who held the first round lead last year following a round of 68 (-3). She eventually finished third. Comer will play alongside Husker golfer Miu Takahashi and Papillion's Sydney Taake, who finished tied for runner-up in 2021.
Fremont Golf Club is a par-71 layout, measuring 5913 yards for the championship. The championship features 54-holes of stroke play, with the Tournament Division playing 36 holes over the final two days from a shorter yardage. There are 11 players in that division.
Play begins at 8 a.m. for Monday’s first round, which features just the Championship Division. The Tournament Division starts play on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Pairings for the first round are available on the championship website below, along with the scoring page and additional information.
