Inaugural Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur Scheduled for the Weekend
Championship Begins Saturday at Fremont Golf Club
OMAHA (September 16, 2021) - A field of 22 players will compete in the Inaugural Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur Championship this weekend at Fremont Golf Club.
The championship is for women 25-and-older, and will feature 36 holes of stroke play. In addition to the championship competition, the field will be flighted based on first round scores, and players will have an opportunity to win prizes within their flight.
The champion will receive the Laura Saf Trophy, in honor of the longtime NGA board member, who passed away in the fall of 2020 from the COVID-19 virus. Saf served the NGA for many years, both as a board member and a volunteer rules official. She was the first woman to serve on the board of directors for the NGA.
“Laura was both a friend and a mentor to so many women golfers," NGA President Kim Robak said this spring. "Honoring her with the trophy for the Nebraska Women’s Mid-Am is a fitting tribute for all that she has contributed to the game.”
The field is highlighted by three past NGA champions, including 18-time champion Susan Marchese of Omaha. Her 11 Nebraska Women's Amateur titles and seven Nebraska Women's Match Play titles are both records, and her 18 total trophies is the most all-time. Marchese is scheduled to play with Anne Robertson of Columbus and Jill Pilkington of Lincoln at 1:30 p.m. for Saturday's first round.
Another multiple NGA champion, Sarah Sasse-Kildow of Lincoln will tee-off in the following group at 1:40 p.m., with Lincoln's Carrie Bostar and Jen Hansen. Sasse-Kildow played in her first championship in nine years at the 2020 Nebraska Women's Amateur, where she finished eighth and was the lowest mid-amateur in the field. The former Husker is a five-time Nebraska Women's Amateur Champion, winning her five titles in a six-year stretch from 1997 to 2002.
Bellevue's Kayla Barnes is also in the field, and is set to play at 1 p.m. with Valley's Lisa Mayer. Barnes, also a former Husker, won Nebraska Women's Amateur titles in 2011 and 2013, and also captured the Nebraska Women's Match Play in 2009.
The 36-hole stroke play championship begins at 1 p.m. with starting times off No. 1 on Saturday for Round One. The Final Round will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday with starting times off No. 1 again.
