Nietfeldt, Sajevic Tied for Lead at Nebraska Mid-Amateur
FREMONT (September 28, 2019) – Elkhorn’s Ryan Nietfeldt and Omaha’s Andy Sajevic are tied for the lead after the first round of the 21st Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship at Fremont Golf Club on Saturday.
Nietfeldt and Sajevic both shot 68 (-3), the low rounds of the day by two strokes. Nietfeldt, the 2001 and 2013 champion, made five birdies, including three birdie-2s on par-3s. Sajevic, a three-time Nebraska Amateur champion who grew up playing Fremont Golf Club, made four birdies and just one bogey during his round. They tied for runner-up honors the last time the Mid-Amateur was conducted at Fremont Golf Club in 2015.
Both players are battling for the Nebraska Golfer of the Year Award. Sajevic is currently No. 3 in the NGA Point Standings, while Nietfeldt is No. 4, but either would jump to No. 1 with a win on Sunday. Both players have won the award before, with Nietfeldt winning in 2002, 2003 and 2012, and Sajevic winning in 2010 and 2013.
Lincoln’s David Easley was the only other player to break par, shooting a 70 (-1) that included five birdies. Three-time champion Travis Minzel of Lincoln is three strokes back after a round of 71 (E). Minzel is looking to become the first four-time champion. The 2014 champion Trent Morrison of Omaha is in fifth after posting a 72 (+1).
Glenn Bills of Grand Island and Ryan Turek of Omaha both are in with round of 73 (+2) and are tied for sixth. Six players are tied for eighth to round out the top 10 at 74 (+3), including 10-time NGA Champion John Sajevic of Fremont. Sajevic has never won the Mid-Amateur, one of just two NGA championships he’s eligible for that he hasn’t captured.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, with starting times off both No. 1 and No. 10 tee. The leaders are set to tee-off at 9:58 a.m., with Nietfeldt, Sajevic and Easley in that final group.
