Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur and Women's Senior Amateur Fields Set

Championships Begin Saturday at Platteview Golf Club

OMAHA (September 21, 2023) - A total field of 32 players will compete in two championships at Platteview Golf Club in Bellevue this weekend, including the 3rd Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur Championship and the 45th Nebraska Women's Senior Amateur Championship.

The Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur was started in 2021 for women 25-and-older, and will feature 36 holes of stroke play. The Nebraska Women's Senior Amateur will be conducted by the Nebraska Golf Association for the first time, after moving over from the Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association this year. The championship started in 1979.

In addition to the championship competition, the Mid-Amateur field, 16 players, will be flighted based on first round scores, and players will have an opportunity to win prizes within their flight. The Senior Amateur field, 16 players, will compete in age divisions (50-57, 58-64 and 65-and-older), in addition the the championship.

This will mark the third time a player will receive the Laura Saf Trophy for winning the Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur, named in honor of the first woman to serve on the NebGolf Board of Directors. Saf was a longtime board member and was a mentor for women's golf in Nebraska. She passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications.

Carrie Bostar of Lincoln, who won the first two editions of the Women's Mid-Amateur, is not competing, so a new champion will be crowned. The field includes last year's runner-up, Kayla Barnes of Bellevue, and the third-place finisher, Deana Morehouse of Papillion, both are members at Platteview. Barnes, a former Husker, is a two-time Nebraska Women's Amateur Champion.

On the Senior Amateur side, the three-time defending champion, Shelly Liddick of Bellevue, is also not in the field, having moved out of the state. However, there are a few past champions in the field, including eight-time champion Susan Marchese of Omaha. Marchese won her eight titles in a nine-year span from 2010-2018, but has not competed since finishing runner-up in 2019. She is two titles shy of the championship record, with O'Neill's Alice Torpin owning 10 titles. Marchese already owns the championship records at the Nebraska Women's Amateur (11) and the Nebraska Women's Match Play (7).

Five-time Champion Jane Pohlman of Omaha is back to compete as well. It's been 10 years since her last title in 2013, which broke up the string of eight Marchese titles. Pohlman has finished inside the top 5 the last two years though. Another past champion in the field is Omaha's Debbie Wilbeck, who won her titles in 2001 and 2002. She's also been in the mix the past five years, with her worst finish being a T6 in 2018.

One more NebGolf champion is in the field as well, as the 1986 Nebraska Women's Match Play Champion Kari Mangan of La Vista will play alongside Marchese and Lincoln's Jill Pilkington at 1:40 p.m. off No. 1.

It will be the first time hosting either championship for Platteview Golf Club, which will play as a par-72 and 5,276 yards for the Senior Amateur, and 5,606 for the Mid-Amateur.

The 36-hole stroke play championships begin at 1 p.m. with starting times off No. 1 on Saturday for Round One. The Final Round will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday with starting times off No. 1 again.

Pairings for the first round are available on the championship websites below, along with the scoring page and additional information.
