Karmazin and Peterson Lead after First Round in Hastings
Round One Conducted Monday at Lochland Country Club
HASTINGS (July 8, 2022) - Omaha's Julia Karmazin leads the 23rd Nebraska Girls' Amateur Championship and Omaha's Teddy Peterson leads the 56th Nebraska Junior Amateur Championship, after the first round on Monday at Lochland Country Club.
Karmazin shot the low round of the girls' championship, a 73 (+1), and leads by two strokes. She is searching for her first NebGolf championship after finishing in the top 10 the last three years, including runner-up in 2022 by two strokes.
Peterson had the round of the day on the boys' side, firing a 69 (-3) to lead by one stroke after the opening round. He is also looking for his first title, after finishing tied for 10th last year.
Karmazin had a slow start, making double-bogey on No. 2, but bounced back with a birdie on the par-3 third hole and finished with a flurry. The 2022 Nebraska Girls' Co-Golfer of the Year was 3-over through 13 holes, but played the last five holes in 2-under, including birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to take the lead.
Grand Island's Julia Messere is just two strokes back after an incredible finish to her round as well. She made an eagle-3 on the par-5 18th hole to post her round of 75 (+3). Messere is also three strokes clear of four players tied for third at 78 (+6), including Madison Murnan of Omaha, Cecilia Arndt of Columbus, Karsen Morrison of North Platte and Izabella Pesicka of Omaha.
Two players are tied for second on the boys' side at 70 (-2), including the 2022 Nebraska Junior Match Play Champion, Jackson Benge of Omaha. He made three birdies and an eagle during his round to get into contention, and is tied with Gretna's Beau Petersen. Petersen made five birdies during his 2-under round, and is looking to continue a great summer after qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship last month. He's headed to South Carolina for that championship in two weeks.
Only two other players broke par, including Beatrice's Trey Baehr, the 2023 NSAA Class B Champion, and Lincoln's Gavin Gerch, who both shot rounds of 71 (-1) and are tied for fourth, two strokes back. A strong group of players sits in a tie for sixth at 72 (E), including 2021 Champion Connor Steichen of Omaha, the 2023 NSAA Class A Champion Porter Topp of Omaha and Prestin Vilai of Grand Island, who was a quarterfinalist at the Nebraska Junior Match Play last month.
The second round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with the fields to be cut to 36 and ties on the boys' side and 15 and ties on the girls' side after play. Full results and Round Two pairings are available on the championship websites below, along with additional information.
