Wildcats, Storm Capture Nebraska Intercollegiate Titles
Final Round Conducted Saturday at Norfolk Country Club
NORFOLK (October 1, 2022) - The Wayne State College Wildcats repeated and the Southeast Community College Storm won the men's team title at the 2022 Nebraska Intercollegiate on Saturday at Norfolk Country Club.
Wayne State rolled to a second-straight title on the women's side, with four players earning Top 10 medals. The Wildcats separated themselves from the field with a final round 330 (+42) to win by 47 strokes over the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Southeast CC won the men's title by a much smaller margin, holding off a final round charge from Midland University to win by seven strokes with a 597 (+21) total.
Four Wayne State players finished inside the Top 5 individually, led by sophomore Abby Brodersen and junior Jazmine Taylor, who tied for runner-up honors. Only one player broke 80 on the women's side in the final round, Maria Pinedo of Bellevue University. Pinedo shot a 78 (+6) to take the individual title with a 160 (+16) total. Brodersen and Taylor both finished a stroke back at 161 (+17), with rounds of 83 (+11) and 80 (+8), respectfully.
Abbey Kurmel, a Wayne State sophomore and the first round leader, finished fourth at 163 (+19) after a final round 86 (+14). Saffire Sayre rounded out the counting scores for the Wildcats, posting an 81 (+9) to finish tied for fifth with Megan Harty of Bellevue University at 168 (+24).
Mackenzie Loseke of Hastings College finished seventh at 169 (+25) and Sofia Laserna of UNK and Viktoria Bortkiewicz-Hamelin, an individual for Wayne State, tied for eighth at 171 (+27). Bellevue University's Tylah Saifoloi also earned a medal, finishing 10th at 172 (+28).
Southeast swept both men's titles, with Ethan Spier claiming the individual title with a 147 (+3) total. Spier's final round 73 (+1) helped him take the top spot by two strokes over three golfers. Three other Storm golfers earned medals, including Cole Feddersen, who tied for fifth with Concordia University's Drew D'Ercole at 150 (+6).
Brock Rowley also earned a medal for the Storm, finishing tied for seventh at 151 (+7) after a final round 76 (+4). Harrison Foxall notched a top 10 finish as well, shooting a 78 (+6) on Saturday to tie for ninth at 152 (+8).
Three players tied for runner-up honors on the men's side, with Midland's Preston Carbaugh, Hastings College's Gabe Escalera and Concordia's Jake Hagerbaumer finishing at 149 (+5). Carbaugh and Hagerbaumer fired two of the only three rounds under-par for the tournament. Carbaugh shot the low round, a 70 (-2), while Hagerbaumer fired a 71 (-1).
Midland's Ben Ngelingkong tied Rowley for seventh at 151 (+7), and five players tied for ninth to capture medals. That group at 152 (+8) included Foxall, Midland's Andrew Egan, Doane University's Ryan Weiss and Blake Anderson, who also posted a red number 71 (-1), and Northeast Community College's Santiago Valdez.
